The records of the White Lung Association in New York include minutes of membership and board minutes, Statement of Principles, incorporation papers, funding proposal information and correspondence between National and New York chapters. The collection also includes state and federal draft legislation, testimony, printed and unpublished materials, documentation of campaigns, publicity flyers, fact sheets, newsletters, technical brochures and leaflets, press releases, correspondence and interviews with victims, case survey files of medical and work history of the workers, as well as newspaper clippings on asbestos and WLA activities. A large amount of the material covers WLA's "Operation Justice" Campaign. The other documents constituting the bulk of this collection are case files of workers, which reflect WLA work among shipyard, construction, manufacturing, communications, maintenance, utility and white-collar workers. The collection can support research in a variety of topics; the most important is the legal and educational struggle for a safe and healthy workplace in New York City, as well as the rest of the country.

The White Lung Association was organized in the fall of 1979 in Los Angeles. It was founded as an educational organization to inform workers and the public of the hazards to their health brought about by exposure to asbestos. Instrumental to its founding were retired and employed shipyard workers who had become ill as a result of their exposure to asbestos.
